Digital literacy has become an integral part of Austrian schools. Since the introduction of the eponymous subject in the 2022\/2023 school year, all students must be taught how to use digital media and technologies. After the introduction of ChatGPT and other AI-generated tools, it is a social concern that the next generation learns about the opportunities, but also the risks, of social media, artificial intelligence and computational thinking. Our newly developed e-learning package digi.skills education addresses exactly this issue and offers a tailor-made teaching tool for the compulsory subject “Digital Basic Education” in six modules.<\/p>\n<\/div>
The compulsory subject “Digital basic education”<\/h2><\/div>In order to prepare students for the challenges of the digital world, the compulsory subject “Digital Basic Education” has been introduced in Austria. The legal basis was published at Federal Law Gazette II No. 267\/2022<\/a>. The subject covers various aspects of digital education with the aim of providing students with comprehensive digital skills. The goal is to prepare the next generation for the challenges, opportunities and threats of the digital future.<\/p>\nThe curriculum is based on the core subject concept of the Frankfurt Triangle, which looks at teaching content from three perspectives:<\/p>\n
\n- technical-medial (T)<\/strong> with the basic question: What are the structures and functions of digital and media systems, technologies and tools?<\/li>\n
- socio-cultural (S)<\/strong> with the key question: What social interactions occur through the use of digital technologies?<\/li>\n
- Interaction-related (I)<\/strong> with the key question: What forms of interaction are there in the use, action and personalization of digital media?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
In addition, the curriculum for the compulsory subject has five areas of competence:<\/p>\n
\n- Orientation:<\/strong> Analyzing and reflecting on the social aspects of media change and digitization<\/li>\n
- Information:<\/strong> Responsible use of data, information and information systems<\/li>\n
- Communication:<\/strong> Communicating and collaborating using information and media systems<\/li>\n
- Production:<\/strong> Create and publish digital content, design algorithms, and program: Decompose problems, recognize patterns, generalize\/abstract, and design algorithms<\/li>\n
- Action:<\/strong> Evaluate and responsibly use opportunities and options for action in a digital world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

<\/i><\/i><\/span>Media change and society<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nThis module provides information about the different types of media and how they should be handled. In this module, students also learn the basics about artificial intelligence and filter bubbles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/i><\/i><\/span>Data, information and information systems<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nSearch engines, search results and personalized searches are part of the third module. The basics of data protection, data backup and data recovery are also taught.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/i><\/i><\/span>Digital communication and social media<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nDigital collaboration and digital communication are the focus of this module. What does digital identity look like and what influence do social networks have? The fourth module of digi.skills education deals with these questions as well as responsible data exchange.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/i><\/i><\/span>Computational Thinking - Designing and creating digital content<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nThe language of computers is introduced in this module. Students deal with the term “computational thinking” and simple program creation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/i><\/i><\/span>Using the opportunities of digitalization<\/span><\/a><\/h4><\/div>\nThe final module covers both – the hardware and software of digital devices.
